About DDF

Duchenne Data Foundation is a worldwide collaboration to enhance the understanding of the course of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) and Becker Muscular Dystrophy (BMD), the effects of treatments, the needs and preferences of DMD/BMD patients and all other aspects relevant to the lives of DMD/BMD patients. In this context, it undertakes infrastructure projects and participates in research projects that concern DMD/BMD.

Role

Software engineer participating in the design, implementation, and maintenance of biomedical databases, as well as the development of applications for the collection and integration of relevant information.

Responsibilities

The selected candidate will:

  • Collaborate with life scientists for the cataloguing of existing databases and the acquisition of user requirements
  • Develop Data Management Plans
  • Use suitable protocols and design principles (FAIR, FHIR, etc.) for distributed biomedical databases
  • Design and implement distributed databases from heterogeneous sources
  • Deploy and manage database management systems
  • Develop applications to support the analysis and mining of data
  • Handle technical IT issues

Required qualifications

To qualify for the role, the candidate must have:

  • Degree in Computer Science or related field
  • Related work experience
  • Knowledge of object-oriented programming
  • Experience in one or more of Java/PHP/Python
  • Experience in virtualisation and containers (Docker)
  • Knowledge and experience in relational databases and data stores
  • Hands-on experience with version control systems (Git/SVN etc.)
  • Fluency in English

Desired Qualifications

Ideally, the candidate shall have also one or more of the following:

  • Good knowledge of NoSQL Databases (BigQuery, Redshift, MongoDB)
  • Experience in server-side deployment (Apache, Nginx, PHP)
  • Experience in developing web APIs and REST
  • Experience in managing and integrating data from different sources
  • Knowledge in data versioning
  • Knowledge in deployment with docker containers
  • Experience in working with biomedical data (e.g. DICOM for images) and relevant protocols, such as HL7-FHIR
  • Experience with security protocols for the transfer and storage of sensitive data
  • Experience in FAIR principles and the development of distributed data management plan
  • Experience in interdisciplinary work
